A prearranged transfer can simplify arrival, while a rental car can provide flexibility for the rest of the trip.

Choose a transfer when arrival simplicity matters most

A transfer can be useful after a long flight, during a late-night arrival, or when the family is staying in a walkable city. The driver and meeting plan are arranged before departure, so there is no rental counter, unfamiliar vehicle, or immediate navigation.

Before booking, confirm the meeting location, waiting-time policy, luggage capacity, flight-delay tracking, child-seat availability, cancellation terms, and whether the price covers the entire group.

Choose a rental car when the trip needs flexibility

A rental car may be the better fit for road trips, rural destinations, theme-park areas, beach towns, or itineraries with several lodging stops. It can also make groceries, naps, and spontaneous changes easier.

Compare the total cost rather than the advertised daily rate. Include taxes, required insurance, child seats, an additional driver, tolls, fuel or charging, one-way fees, hotel parking, attraction parking, and the security deposit.

Check the child-seat plan

Rules and availability vary by destination and provider. Confirm the child’s age and size requirements using official local guidance. If renting a seat, request the exact category needed and verify it again before arrival. If bringing your own, check the airline’s transport policy and whether the seat is compatible with the vehicle you expect.

Count passengers and luggage honestly

A vehicle listed for five people may not hold five travelers plus large suitcases, a stroller, and child seats. Choose by usable passenger and cargo space. For transfers, provide an accurate bag count. For rentals, consider moving up a vehicle class if the final row would eliminate most storage.

Think about the destination after check-in

If parking is expensive and public transportation is easy, a rental car may sit unused. If attractions are spread out or transit is limited, repeated rides may cost more than a car. Map the entire trip before choosing the airport option.
